Vinyl Junkie

I LOVE the feeling of purchasing new vinyl, opening it, devouring it cover-to-cover and painting my room with noise from Side A to finish, as intended. It’s like tapping into my personal portal of emotions, inspirations and beauty that can only be accessed when I listen to a record. It’s like a drug that heals me and gives me strength. Kind of like a super power. A super power to create art, grow and become my dream.

This is why I buy music. Real hold-in-your-hands music. Vinyl preferably, but a CD will do.

I originally started writing this post for one reason; The Sound Awake (my husbands) band is releasing their latest album on vinyl and CD! I am so excited for him and want to find any way possible to get the word out. Please help spread the word and if you want dibs on some free stuff like Original Artwork Vinyl (created by me and a few other artist), House Shows (that’s right, they will come and play your house show!),hand written lyrics and more. Click on the video to the right to watch as The Sound Awake explains their campaign and gives you a taste of their sound.

Los Angeles and New York City based pop/rock four piece, Dum Dum Girls , release their fourth EP, End of Daze. Reminiscent of  80’s Heart, with fuzz and crunch like Crystal Stilts, this album is a gem.

LIKE: Sounds like Vivian Girls, Heart, Crystal Stilts and Le Sara.

STUDIO MUSIC: Big Scary

After spending a week falling in love with Big Scary’s compilation record Four Seasons,  I finally purchased it. I love this record and wanted to share it with you!

About the Band: Originally from Melborne, VIC Australia, Gorgeous girl drummer meets Beautiful boy strummer. Big Scary is completely inspired by weather and influenced by Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Jeff Buckley.

“Big in its ambition and almost scary in its scope, depth and range, Big Scary’s music knows no boundaries, moving effortlessly between howling, fuzzed-out garage rock, intricate, pastoral piano and sublime rainy-day ballads. Beginning in 2006, Iansek and Syme started making music with acoustic guitars and egg shakers. After a year-long break, the two returned to the still-unnamed project in 2008 with new ideas and new instruments—electric guitars and drum kits and mandolins and ukuleles. Unconcerned with any notion of genre, and drawing on their formal training-Iansek in piano, Syme in jazz drumming—the two let their writing take them where it may. This process, then as now, continues onto the stage, where Iansek and Syme’s remarkable chemistry allows them to play each song as they feel it in the moment, to follow searing rock numbers with exquisite hushed balladry.”[TheBigScary]

About the Music: “In mid 2010, the band released the first of four seasonally themed, limited-edition EPs. With these releases, Big Scary showed themselves capable of translating the vagaries and glories of each season-the flurry of rich colour in autumn, the quiet bleakness of winter, the renewal of spring, the majesty of a summer thunderstorm—into utterly compelling music, as full of heart as it is free of pretension. In February 2011 all four EPs were compiled onto one LP as ‘The Big Scary Four Seasons”[triplejunearthed].

STUDIO MUSIC: Dag for Dag

“You make your guitar scream out the words you can’t, you let that old piano do your crying and you chew your knuckles bloody out of joy, out of desire, out of sorrow and of rage, and you do it like Dag för Dag, day by day. ” (Bebban Stenborg Los Angeles, October 2008).

Dag för Dag is a band from Stockholm, Sweden. Their first communal noise was made September 2007, and after a quick jaunt practicing, they hit the road for all of 2008, sharing the stage with some mighty awesome bands (Wolf Parade, The Kills, Lykke Li, Shout Out Louds). (Last Fm)

Upon listening to their latest release, BOO, I was quickly hooked on the dynamic female vocals that were smooth as glass complemented with catchy male vocals, incredible guitars tone, and sounds that filled my ears with layers of beauty and story that created an internal movie that I didn’t want to turn off. Listen to their entire album for free on their website here.
